I didnt know what floating almonds meant or how many are typically found in batchesThese are just okay, I wasn't expecting perfection, I'm glad I can buy these in bulk to make almond milk, I wish I could get them at the grocery store in this size and I am on my third 5 pound bag of these. This last bag (see picture) I purchased in June seemed to have a noticeable amount of almonds that are floating atop the water in our blender. So I took a picture (then removed them) and then googled why this could be so (theres also a picture of reason also included if you can read it, otherwise just google it for yourself). Apparently this ndicates that the ones which are floating could be rancid (which are also harder to digest) and could cause stomach issues, so best to remove those. The ones floating in the picture were around 1/4 cups worth or so. I guess its to be expected to a certain degree but I wouldnt consider them gourmet, although I found most of these almonds to be whole and not broken into pieces as others have stated.3Wouldn't buy againWeighed on a calibrated balance accurate to .01oz, 8oz at a time, the bag was only 2oz short of 5lb, but somehow any short doesn't engender good feelings like any long would... The almonds are pretty obviously the ones that didn't make the grade (A, I mean), they are mostly small, a few very large, but they are nearly all whole. Mine are roasted and they taste good enough, especially with just a teaspoon of powdered Himilayan Pink salt added per pound, but the l price just isn't low enough to justify the lower quality of these nuts. I would not buy them again.2Rancid nuts on third orderThey are fresh and have good flavor but are almost as crunchy as roasted.I revised my initial review because the third time I ordered these almonds many of the nuts were rancid. I gave 2 stars instead of one since the first 2 batches were okay, meaning not rancid. Nothing like really fresh raw almonds but for the price that makes sense. With the third order they weren't all rancid which led me to believe the company mixed in some older almonds with fresher ones. This problem isn't just about flavor, it's that rancid nuts (and oils) are harmful to your health. (If you're interested, the science is that nuts contain unsaturated fats that oxidize when exposed to heat, light and air, breaking the double bonds in the fat molecules. The short-chain fatty acids left behind are what make nuts rancid. The oils then develop potentially toxic compounds that promote inflammation and are carcinogenic.) Rancid nuts have a somewhat bitter, rank aftertaste. They also develop an odor which is not there with fresh nuts. This holds true, of course, for cooking oils so it's a great idea to sniff first if your bottle of oil has been around for awhile. Vegetable oil, for example, should have almost no scent if it's fresh.2These are some of the best almonds availableThese are the best almonds for the price that you can find. Not only are they treated (as all California almonds are as required by law) but they are treated with steam rather than chemicals like so many other brands. I toast them in the microwave about a pound at a time (for about 8 minutes total after stirring every two minutes) and the family loves them. These Delish almonds are now the "go to" snack for all of us and as almonds are recognized to be among the better nuts for snacking there is no downside. And I have purchased from Delish through Amazon before but was not so dissapointed. Firstly they're small, but secondly there are more bad almonds than any others I've ever purchased. I wish I had known, but I don't know if I was just sent a bad batch. They are slightly smaller than many almonds I have purchased before, but are very flavorful with just the right amount of salt added. Since you are buying the almonds by weight and not size the smaller almonds don't mean you get less product. I go through nut a lot in the house. I don't know what happened. Maybe the harvest was not so good or I got the older nuts.
